Orcawise Innovation Program (OIP) – AI & Healthcare MVP Development

About Orcawise & the OIP Program. OIP is a 100-day, volunteer work experience program for experience graduates looking to transition to a career in AI.

Orcawise is assembling an elite team of MSc and PhD-level AI researchers, data scientists, and engineers to develop an MVP for a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) system that revolutionizes medical coding, billing, and insurance claim processing.

Medical coding serves as the universal language between hospitals, doctors, billers, and insurance companies, ensuring accurate billing and reimbursement. However, errors in medical coding lead to claim denials, revenue loss, and compliance risks. Our goal is to leverage RAG-powered AI to create a next-generation coding assistant that automates and optimizes this process.

This 100-day intensive program within OIP (Orcawise Innovation Program) will focus on building a functional MVP, showcasing AI’s power in medical administration and compliance.

Role: AI Research & Engineering Team (MSc/PhD)

Location: Remote / Hybrid (Dublin-based collaboration possible)

Key Responsibilities

AI Research & Model Development

• Develop a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipeline to assist medical coders and billers.
• Build NLP models that extract relevant ICD, CPT, and HCPCS codes from unstructured physician notes.
• Implement context-aware AI recommendations for accurate and compliant medical coding.

Data Engineering & Compliance Integration

• Preprocess and structure medical records, insurance claims, and billing datasets.
• Ensure the system retrieves and applies the latest regulatory guidelines for compliance (Medicare, Medicaid, private insurers).
• Design fraud detection mechanisms to identify upcoding, duplicate claims, and billing anomalies.

Prototyping & Deployment

• Build an MVP API/interface for real-world testing in medical billing workflows.
• Optimize for real-time claim validation, error detection, and AI-assisted appeals.
• Collaborate with subject matter experts (medical coders, insurers) to fine-tune AI outputs.

What We're Looking For

✅ MSc/PhD in AI, Data Science, NLP, or Biomedical Informatics
✅ Experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) models & LLMs
✅ Proficiency in Python, PyTorch/TensorFlow, and NLP frameworks (Hugging Face, LangChain, etc.)
✅ Knowledge of medical coding standards (ICD, CPT, HCPCS) is a plus
✅ Familiarity with healthcare regulations & compliance (HIPAA, EU GDPR, payer policies)
✅ Ability to work in a fast-paced, research-driven environment

Job Types: Part-time, Temporary, Contract

Expected hours: 15 – 20 per week
